The “Been Living Under A Rock” Book List

Tips & Tools Books

For those of you who have been missing from the planet and have spent the last 10 years in your own world, here is a list of good books that everyone should know about and read. Take this as you do a karaoke book: Go by the title but also check out the other material that the author has to offer. Like I said, this list is for people who have lived under a rock spiritually for the past 10 years, and many of these wonderful authors have written over 10 more books since. I originally wrote this for my friend Bill, whose rock is called “med school and surgery residency”, but who, before that, was the guy who introduced me to the wonderful Road Less Traveled, by M. Scott Peck.

  1. Conversations with God, Book One – by Neale Donald Walsch. Regardless of your religious beliefs and whether you think Neale actually talked to God or not, the insights in the first book of the trilogy are mind-blowing. The sole description of how man and woman attract each other and the fruit of their love comes to be (I like to call this the ‘Tomary’ section’) is worth the read. Plus, Walsch can write – with pathos, with humor, with personality (yes, in this book, God is funny, too. Comforting, isn’t it?) Bonus: Sign up for his daily thought-provoking, inspirational emails.
  2. Many Lives, Many Masters – by Dr. Brian Weiss. This is a book for skeptics on the edge of believing in something beyond this life. Weiss was the head of the Psychiatry department at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami when he stumbled upon past lives during a patient regression. His books discuss the wisdom of seeing your current woes as having a reason from a past life, so as to help you explore this possibility and let go of any present-day obstacles. His latest, Same Soul, Many Bodies, even goes into your future life.
  3. That Elixir Called Love – by Ramtha. This book compiles many of Ramtha’s teachings about sex, attraction and love – something that everyone wants and many wonder how to get. Here, the master entity known as Ramtha tells it like it is and like it should be when it comes to relationships, including the one you have with yourself.
  4. The Four Agreements – by Don Miguel Ruiz . The four habits (“Don’t Take Anything Personal”, “Don’t Assume”, “Do Your Best” and “Impeccable Speech”) that Ruiz explains here are crucial to a healthy, creative, powerful life of good communication, awareness and excellence.
  5. Heal Your Body – by Louise Hay. This was Louise’s original jewel and, along with its quick-reference companion, Heal Your Body A-Z, it is a great guide to understand the mental patterns that are related to each disease. Following the principle that it is your thoughts – along with nutrition and your environment – that cause disease, Louise cured herself of cancer sans drugs or surgery, with affirmations, cleansing and other techniques outlines in her books.
  6. The Power of Now – by Eckhart Tolle. Whatever your beliefs, one thing is indisputable: all we have is the here and now. But how many of us waste our lives by focusing on the past (“if I only ha done that”) or the future (“if I could just have this”). Tolle shows you the importance and the tools to focus on the present moment, and transform your life with the awareness of what reality really is.
